The BHSU Yellow Jackets football team kicks off at the first home game Sept. 26

Black Hill State University football started their at-home season Sept. 26 in a match up against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. The Yellow Jackets pushed hard against the 11th ranked team, but the Orediggers proved too tough. BHSU lost 62-22, leading to their fourth loss in a row.

The first quarter ended with the Yellow Jackets behind 20-0 but the team rallied in the second quarter, scoring 13 unmatched points.

BHSU’s first touchdown of the game was a 30-yard pass received by Bradley Adamson after an Orediggers’ failed punt. Continuing the streak, quarterback Ryan Hommel completed an incredible 21-yard pass to Eriq Swiftwater, who caught the ball with one foot barely in bounds. The rally was short-lived, however, as the Orediggers claimed another touchdown with just 22 seconds left in the half.

BHSU began the third quarter with a bang, scoring their third touchdown of the game during their first possession of the half. Phydell Paris ran the ball 49 yards, breaking through several tackles attempts to claim another six points for the Yellow Jackets.

Their success was brief as the Orediggers completed four more touchdowns in short order, aided by several Yellow Jacket turnovers.

The past few seasons have been rough for BHSU. They ended the 2014 season with a 3-8 record. Saturday’s unseasonably hot day certainly affected players, with highs reaching nearly 90.

The BHSU Yellow Jackets hope to break their losing streak Oct. 3 in Grand Junction, Colo. as they face the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.
