BHSU honors alumni during Swarm Days

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State University honored several alumni during the Alumni Awards luncheon and the Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on the Friday of Swarm Days this past week.  

The Distinguished Alumna Award was given to Col. Stacy L. (Trezona) Goodman, Ph.D. ’99, the Special Achievement Award to Dr. Nathan Steinle ’01, The Excellence in Education Award to Chris Haines ’85, the Young Alumni Achievement Award to Ashley (Grable) Hunter ’14, and the Special Service Award to former BHSU professor Dr. David A. Wolff.  

Tom Wheaton, director of Alumni Affairs, said, “The BHSU Alumni Association honored five individuals who over the years have gone above and beyond in their areas of expertise. The success they have achieved and the commitment they have shown to their respective fields is truly inspiring. Well-deserved honors for each one of them.”  

  The Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony was held later that same day. The induction included nine individuals: Mike Besso (‘77, Contributor), Kristin Engle Carmichael (‘09, Volleyball), Joe Case (‘74, Contributor), Cal R. Corey (Track Coach), Al Decker (‘82, Contributor), Jeffery Kelley (‘02, Football), Katelynn Lamb Pottorff (‘11, Women’s Basketball), Trent Waage (‘09, Track & Field) and Wendy O’Lexey Williams (‘10, Cross Country, Track & Field).   

Three teams were also inducted: the 1992-93 Men’s Basketball Team, the 1997 Volleyball Team, and the 1993 Women’s Outdoor 400-Meter Relay Team.   

Vice President for University Advancement Steve Meeker said, “For the athletes, this award means a lot because it’s the highest honor you can receive as an athlete.”   

“It means a lot to the University as well,” Meeker continued, “These athletes put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into being the best BHSU representatives they could be.
